Sarah Gadon captivated on-lookers at the 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival last month where she premiered two of her films during the two-week long chic festival.

Though Sarah seems to prefer classically glam looks to heavy embellishments and sexy, trendy cutouts, her makeup and hairstyles tell a different story. I like the way Sarah mixes youthful ‘dos with her retro dresses and the best part of it, is that these styles are very easy to replicate!

Hairstylist Marcus Francis helped Sarah get ready for her close-up at the press events for the films “Antiviral” and “Cosmopolis”, and shared his tips with The Fashion Court on how you can recreate two of her stylish on-trend looks.

Sarah joined the cast and crew for “Antiviral” for a press conference and photocall, where she donned a bright red Jason Wu dress and rocked a fun braided headband. The weather on the French Riviera was very dark and gloomy that afternoon, but fear not, Marcus was prepare for this.

“When the weather turned to rain and wind at the Cannes Film Festival, it was so important for Sarah’s hair to withhold any surprises from mother nature. I wanted her to wear it up, keeping in line with the light and sweet feeling from her 50’s inspired dress. The texture from the full halo braid was perfect from every angle at the film’s photo call.”

Want to rock a braided halo? I’ll just let Marcus tell you what to do…

Prep the hair with a volumizer like Phyto Phytovolume Actif Maximizing Volume Spray throughout the hair to build a thickness in the texture. Rough dry with your hands while blow drying. Follow with Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray to help the braid from slipping. Make a deep side part and section off to start a reverse French braid one to two inches from the hairline, all the way around the head.

When adding sections to the braid, make sure it’s pulled smooth and clean from the hairline. When you’ve reached the starting point, finish off the braid and tuck into the front braid and pin with small Bobby pins. With the end of a tail comb, gently loosen the front of the hair for a subtle lift.

This is a slightly more dressy version to the headband braid because of the height it creates. Lightly pull apart the braid and loosen around all the way around the head to create a softer look. Finish off by using small bobby pins to secure the braid and spray L’Oréal Elnett Hairspray for added hold.

When it was time to premiere “Cosmopolis” with costars Robert Pattinson, Emily Hampshire and director David Cronenberg the following the week, Sarah let her hair down as the sun decided to show itself on the day of the photocall and presser.

This time around, Sarah selected a colorblock pencil dress from Roland Mouret, which featured a sharp off-the-shoulder that allowed for her tresses to beautifully tumble over.

Once again, Marcus took full advantage of the occasion when it came to getting Sarah’s strawberry blonde locks ‘picture perfect’.

“To keep Sarah’s look youthful, I felt the hair needed to have a relaxed texture to it, like if she had a day of ocean air to bring out the natural bend. Twisting back one side gave a glamorous shape that show a balance of natural and polished.”

This is a great look to try this summer if you like to leave your hair out, but don’t want it blowing in your eyes on a windy day. The partially tucked style keeps your tresses from getting too unruly, and makes for easier photo ops when gathering your friends together on the beach in the midst of the ocean breeze.

Another plus to this summer style is that it will easily take you from the sand to the boardwalk for date night or an outdoor concert.

Want to know if it’s as easy to achieve as it looks? The answer is “yes” and Marcus will tell you how!

On damp hair spray Phyto Phytovolume Actif Maximizing Volume Spray on the roots and mid shaft and Frédéric Fekkai COIFF Océanique Tousled Wave Spray on the mid shaft and ends. Comb through with a wide tooth comb and twist medium size sections of hair all the way to the ends. With a diffuser dry the hair and follow with wrapping random pieces throughout with a 3/4″ curling iron alternating directions for a more natural movement to the hair.

Use the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray and lightly apply throughout; shake out the hair to separate naturally. Choosing the side to twist back should be the same side as your part. Twist upward toward the crown secure with a few bobby pins. Lightly use L’Oréal Elnett Hairspray for a finishing hold.

Now it’s all up to you! Good luck and have fun!
